Understanding NEET in the outskirts of Denmark: A Negative Consequence On the Development of the Rural Municipality
A Qualitative Examination
Thesis project description
I am interested in the occurence known worldwide as NEET or Not in Education, Employment or Training and what forms this takes on in a Northern, egalitarian country with ostensibly equal acces to educational attainment. More specifically, I seek to clarify and provide possible reasons to why some of the Danish youth residing in the outskirts of Denmark, currently are standing outside from society. I plan to methodologically investigate this through the utilization of a qualitative toolbox, that counts both different kinds of interview techniques as well as participant observation. My hope is to be able to engage in a cooperative effort with a local municipality or organisation. Ideally, with an interest in the increase of the total sum of the youth occupied by either education, employment or some form of training. I will be writing my thesis at the Faculty of Social Sciences, a Department of The University of Copenhagen in the Fall of 2024. There for, I would ideally appreciate that the collaborative effort takes place between September and December of 2024. Further details can be discussed based on the needs of the thesis partner.
Managerial value of the research
A collaboration with me would bring your company or organisation value, because I can provide methodological aid in doing research relating to the social sciences and to help target intiatives directed at the NEET part of the population. This is worth your time, because it comes at no cost to your budget, but is free. Additionally, working towards gainful employment has an interest in limiting the amount of people on stately funded benefits. Furthermore, it helps qualify the initiatives already put in on the matter and offer a possible revision of these, if needs be. I believe that this can be a valuable piece of knowledge, either to be used in-house or sold to other relevant actors.
Research topic motivation
I am motivated to work on the topic of NEET because it is an under-researched phenomenon in the Danish context, as of late. It has previously been afforded scholarly attention, but these papers have not considered limiting themselves to geographical locations in Denmark, where the diversity of educational institutions are limited. I have decided on this direction, because I believe it to be significant to shorten the gap between the unequal distribution of opportunities residing in the countryside and those in the four biggest Danish cities. Or at least, to understand if there is any difference between NEET people in the countryside and in the capital.

Although I have outlined a specific project, I intend to aid the organization that chooses to cooperate with me wholeheartedly. Therefore, I will focus on contributing more to the specific challenges the organization are facing, rather than prioritizing my own academic interest.
