Thesis project description
In this thesis, we will explore the complex phenomenon of franchise fatigue within today's film industry. Franchise fatigue refers to the condition where the audience shows signs of tiredness or disinterest towards established franchises, even as they continue to be released by film studios. With the increasing dominance of franchises in mainstream cinema, it is crucial to understand the reasons behind this fatigue to inform future production and business decisions.
For this, we will examine the Star Wars and Jurassic Park franchises respectively.
Managerial value of the research
Since the franchise model is utilized by many film studios worldwide, it's important for these studios to understand why audiences do or don't get tired of films within genres like superheroes, sci-fi, or fantasy. We use Reddit as a source for our data collection through a questionnaire, and then analyze the Jurassic Park and Star Wars franchises based on the data we've gathered. This way, we can determine exactly what it is that people are tired of in the new installments of the franchise. Is it poorly written characters? Is it overly obvious nostalgia-baiting? What, according to Reddit users, are the new films getting wrong altogether? That's what our thesis will focus on.
Research topic motivation
Our motivation for writing the thesis stems from a genuine curiosity about the phenomenon of franchise fatigue. In today's media landscape, the old Hollywood studios struggle to keep up and therefore rely on old franchises like Star Wars and Jurassic Park. However, fatigue is evident among the audience, as indicated by poor reviews from both consumers and professional critics. Therefore, we aim to investigate precisely what it is that audiences are tired of in the new Star Wars and Jurassic Park films - two franchises that have existed since 1977 and 1993, respectively.
Why collaborate with us
We are two hardworking and academically well-versed graduate students with a deep understanding of the trends within the film industry. We have previously delved into major franchises as a phenomenon, and although it's a broad topic that can be approached from various angles (such as the production process, the economic aspect, and the marketing strategies), we believe that the most crucial aspect for a film franchise is its audience. If the audience is experiencing fatigue with a franchise, it's imperative to investigate why.
