Social acceptance of wind power

How society views the ever-increasing presence of wind power

Project description

What are the obstacles that onshore and offshore wind power installation faces in modern day societies.

The relative acceptance of onshore and offshore wind power over the year and the importance of densities, distances and viewsheds.

Willingness to pay for onshore and offshore wind power development and acceptance of CO2 mitigating measures.

Managerial value of the research

As wind power becomes more popular and important for countries, it faces new obstacles as the ever-growing presence of onshore and offshore wind farms, often meets with local resistance from the people that live and work in those areas.

This thesis would provide us with an in-depth analysis of how people in different areas, cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds, perceive wind farms, what are the main arguments against the installation of those (namely the distance from population centers, the visibility, the effect on local businesses) and how can countries and companies overcome those obstacles by persuading the public.

An extensive analysis of that subject could help create a roadmap for companies and governments to deal with public resistance against wind farms, as it would document the main arguments against and provide with solutions to overcome those.

Research topic motivation

As a master's student in Sustainable Energy and as resident in Denmark, I've noticed that society here approaches the issue of the increasing wind farms quite differently compared to my home country (Greece).

There, issues such as visibility, distances from population centers and effect on local businesses (such as fisherman, farmers, people that work in tourism), play an important role whenever there is a discussion about installing new wind farms. Whether for legitimate reasons or just general misconceptions, the installation of wind farms and the transition to green energy becomes much harder.

I'm sure these issues exist in other countries as well and as the world is evolving, replacing fossil fuels with green energy, it is important to persuade the public about this transition and find out the potential issues that wind power presents and try to mitigate and solve them.

Why collaborate with us

In my master's I've taken both technical courses regarding wind farms and also socioeconomic ones that deal with costs and public perception and I always found interesting the opposition against this issue, so much so that I wanted to research this topic more in my thesis.

As I mentioned before, this issue is a very important in my home country and I feel that this give extra passion to work on this and do extensive research about the reasons that happens.

Besides that, as Denmark is home to many world-leading wind power companies, that operate not just in Denmark but also internationally, I'm confident that an extensive analysis on this issue, would be essential and extremely useful to them, as it would create a path into overcoming these obstacles.

I have a passion for photography and enjoy capturing moments and scenes that tell a story through the lens of my camera. Additionally, I love going on hikes with my friends, where we explore nature. Whenever I find the opportunity, I try to volunteer in my local community and give back as much as I can to the world. These activities help me grow as a person and make me happy.

Passion and motivation

Passionate about Sustainable Energy and Physics, I am currently pursuing my studies at the Technical University ofDenmark (DTU) to further enhance my expertise in these fields. At DTU, I am actively broadening my knowledge in diverseareas such as programming and energy systems modeling, with a specific focus on Electric Energy Systems andoptimizing global energy requirements. Throughout my academic journey, I have actively sought out opportunities to gain practical experience, enabling me todevelop a well-rounded skill set. I have undertaken highly specialized scientific internships, where I developed my technicalabilities and contributed to cutting-edge research.
