Shifting Perspectives: The Influence of Film on Opinions
A Film Sociology study: Genre Dynamics and Audience Opinion Shifts at a Film Festival
Thesis project description
Thesis topic: Film sociology
Our idea is to investigate how films can influence an audience's opinions, thoughts, or convictions. In this context, we will explore how an audience reacts, behaves, and acts based on a specific genre of film presented at a given film festival.
Data will be collected through interviews with the audience after a documentary film screening, conducted in two phases: first, during the festival, and second, six months later. In the latter phase, the questionnaire will be tailored to specify whether the film has impacted the audience's attitudes, prejudices, convictions, etc.
To achieve this, we will apply media ecology by zooming in on the specific agenda of the documentary film, and conduct reception analysis to understand how the audience reacts and whether the film influences their attitudes.
Short introduction to Film sociology
Shortly speaking Film sociology typically refers to the study of films from a sociological perspective. It involves analyzing films to understand and interpret societal values, norms, and structures. Film sociology explores how movies reflect and influence social issues, cultural trends, and the collective consciousness of a society. Some examples could be how films shape and are shaped by social contexts, and how they contribute to the construction of identity, perceptions, and ideologies within a given community or society.

The Relevance of Film Sociology in a Thesis - And why the topic is relevant for a company
We believe that a thesis in film sociology can have various practical applications and contribute to both academic and non-academic contexts.
Here are some potential uses for the results from a thesis in film sociology:
Academic Contributions: Research Advancement: Contribute to the academic field by expanding knowledge in film sociology, presenting new theories, or offering insights into the relationship between film and society.Educational Resources: Serve as a resource for students and educators interested in the intersection of sociology and film studies.Film Industry Impact:Influence filmmakers and producers by providing a sociological perspective on the impact of films on society, potentially guiding the creation of content that is more socially aware.Social and Cultural Awareness:Policy Implications: Contribute to discussions on media policies and regulations by highlighting the societal implications of certain film content.Public Discourse: Provide a critical analysis of the media landscape, fostering a better understanding of how films contribute to public discourse and cultural narratives.Public Awareness: Increase public awareness of the social and cultural impact of films, fostering more informed media consumption.Ultimately, a thesis in film sociology has the potential to contribute valuable insights to both academic scholarship and real-world applications, influencing how we understand, create, and engage with films in society.
Research topic motivation
As students of movies and media, its our peak interest to investigate how people see and reacts on movies. In our earlier academic work, we have for example investigated peoples social connection to livestreaming, how an audience would react on certain movie genres and much more. Filmsociology is just a new layer in that pile. At the same time, movies are at the top of the entertainment industry and almost everyone in the western world watches movies today. But what influence do they truly have on a person/audience.? So the film's widespread use, combined with our own interest is the motivation for choosing the subject.
Why collaborate with us
As students, we have multiple times, succesfully, completed courses involving filmstudies. And with good grades to back us up. Furtermore we have worked together since 2018 and know each others strengths and weaknesses, which makes us an excellent team. Outside of the studies, we have both been engaged in film. One of us, in the journalistic world and the other as a volunteer in movie festivals. Our kombined knowledge and great teamwork, is the foundation, that will secure a great collaberation with a company.
