Merge and Acquisition and Business Innovation

Comparative Case Study on Measuring Business Innovation before and after Mergers and Acquisitions

Project Description

In the course of my seminar work on "Current Issues of Business Administration," I found the topic of "Mergers and Acquisitions" particularly intriguing. Now, I aim to merge this topic with my research interest in Business Innovation.

My idea is to conduct a comparison of innovative activity and innovation strategy of a company before and after a merger or acquisition. However, I encountered the challenge of measuring Business Innovation. To address this issue, I propose conducting a case study that offers the opportunity to assess Business Innovation both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Objectives:

  • To investigate the impact of mergers and acquisitions on the Business Innovation of companies.
  • To evaluate the measurability of Business Innovation using quantitative indicators such as investments in research and development, patent filings, and trademark registrations.
  • To conduct a comparative analysis of two companies to examine different approaches to fostering Business Innovation. To incorporate qualitative data from employee interviews to capture and understand the non-quantifiable aspects of Business Innovation.

Methodology:

The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. Primary data will be gathered through interviews with employees and decision-makers of the studied companies. Secondary data will be extracted from financial reports, company documents, and industry-specific publications. The case study will cover a period before and after a merger or acquisition to capture changes in innovation activity.

Expected Outcomes:

  • A better understanding of the effects of M&A activities on Business Innovation.
  • Identification of quantitative indicators for measuring Business Innovation.
  • Comparison of innovation strategies between two companies and identification of best practices.
  • Insight into the non-quantifiable factors influencing a company's innovation culture.

The proposed case study provides an opportunity to delve deeper into the complex relationship between Mergers and Acquisitions and Business Innovation. By combining quantitative and qualitative approaches, we can gain a more comprehensive understanding of a company's innovation activity before and after a merger or acquisition.

As I already conduced research in the field of M&A I now aim to link it business innovation with the case of one specific firm or a comparison.

Managerial value of the research

Our collaboration could serve as a catalyst for innovation within the company. By conducting in-depth research and analysis on the impact of mergers and acquisitions on Business Innovation, we can provide valuable insights and strategic recommendations that can fuel innovation initiatives within the organization. These insights could lead to the development of new products, services, or processes that drive growth and competitiveness.

Through our research, we aim to generate actionable insights that companies can leverage to optimize their strategies and practices related to mergers and acquisitions and Business Innovation. By uncovering best practices, identifying key success factors, and highlighting potential pitfalls, our collaboration can help the company to make informed decisions and navigate the complexities of the business landscape more effectively.

The company can gain a strategic advantage in their respective industries. By staying at the forefront of research and innovation trends, companies can position themselves as leaders in their field, differentiate themselves from competitors, and capture new opportunities for growth and expansion. Our collaboration can help the company stay ahead of the curve and anticipate future developments in the market.

Research topic motivation

General curiosity in the topic of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and Business Innovation deeply intrigues me, and I find it highly relevant to my academic background and professional interests. My journey with this theme began during my academic studies, where I encountered various case studies and theoretical frameworks exploring the intersection of M&A activities and innovation outcomes.

Moreover, the dynamic nature of the business landscape, especially in industries experiencing rapid change and disruption like technology, healthcare, and consumer goods, fuels my curiosity. Mergers and acquisitions often serve as strategic maneuvers for companies striving to adapt to shifting market trends, capitalize on emerging opportunities, and maintain their competitive edge. Investigating how these strategic actions impact innovation within organizations provides invaluable insights into the factors driving success and sustainability in today's fast-paced business environment.

Additionally, prior research conducted on the topic has further stimulated my interest. Reviewing existing literature, case studies, and empirical studies has provided me with a foundational understanding of the complexities and nuances involved in M&A-driven innovation. Building upon this knowledge base, I am eager to delve deeper into the subject, uncover new insights, and contribute to the existing body of knowledge in this field."

Why collaborate with us

I bring a genuine passion for research that extends beyond the mere necessity of writing a thesis. I possess an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a relentless drive to educate myself beyond the required curriculum. My eagerness to deeply understand the topic at hand enables me to make a real impact on the company by creating value with the knowledge I build up during the research process.

I approach research as more than just a task to be completed; rather, it is an opportunity to delve into the depths of a subject, uncovering insights and connections that may not be immediately apparent.

I am committed to fighting the resistance and challenges that arise when merging two complex topics like mergers and acquisitions and business innovation, where the measurement of innovation can be particularly elusive.
