Harnessing the Gut Microbiome for Next-Generation Metabolic Disease Therapeutics

Exploring microbial metabolites, engineered strains, and host–microbiome interactions as drug targets

This project explores how the gut microbiome and its metabolic products influence host physiology, particularly glucose regulation, satiety, and lipid metabolism. Using literature and data-driven tools, the goal is to identify specific microbial pathways or metabolites that could serve as novel therapeutic entry points, either via microbial engineering, metabolite supplementation, or microbiota modulation (e.g. pre/pro/postbiotics).

For pharmaceutical or biotech companies aiming to expand their metabolic pipelines, microbiome-based interventions represent an exciting frontier. This project supports first-in-class thinking, innovation scouting, and early-stage exploratory R&D. It also opens possibilities for partnerships in the nutrition, diagnostics, or digital health space.

Emne motivation

The gut–brain–metabolism axis is such an elegant system, and I find the idea of designing treatments that don’t directly target the human body, but rather its microbial symbionts, endlessly exciting. This project allows me to combine immunology, metabolic biology, and data-driven thinking, all areas I am passionate about.

Talent bio

I have just completed my fourth semester in Life Science and Technology at the Technical University of Denmark, where I specialise in technical biomedicine. I plan to continue directly into the MSc in Pharmatechnology in 2026. Through my studies, I have gained hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge in biochemistry, organic chemistry, molecular biology, immunology, bioinformatics, drug development, laboratory methods, and statistics. In my fifth semester, I will be going on academic exchange, where I plan to focus further on metabolic pathways and developmental biology — areas that increasingly fascinate me.

Passion og motivation

I am driven by the desire to create meaningful change in healthcare — to make life better and treatments more accessible. My passion for biotechnology and mathematics led me to Life Science and Technology, where I now feel confident that I want to help develop future therapies that are both innovative and equitable. I am especially inspired by the discovery of new metabolic pathways and their potential as therapeutic targets. I'm also deeply interested in developing long-term solutions for allergies — a growing global challenge that I believe deserves greater attention. Whether in drug discovery, formulation, or translational science, I want to contribute to impactful, real-world solutions.
