Hydrogen: The fuel of the future?

Feasibility, optimal location and optimised operation of Ptx facilities in a local integrated energy system

Context :  Mitigation of climate change call for actions towards investments and integration in renewable energy sources. Although there are great expectations to the role of Power-to-X (PtX) as they potentially can contribute to the overall efficiency and balancing of the energy system with energy storage and transfer of green energy to end-use sector, regional commercial PtX-projects have not yet emerged. A next step towards ensuring economic-feasibility of PtX projects is system optimisation, herein a smart integration of energy systems and sectors. Therefore, knowledge is still missing regarding key measures for the integration of P2G facilities into the energy system; herein: the feasibility of P2G facilities, optimal location as well as optimised operation of a PtX facility in a local integrated energy system. Objective: The main objective of this Master’s Thesis is to assess the feasibility, optimal location and optimised operation of a PtX facility in a local integrated energy system. To facilitate the assessment, the energy network model, OptiFlow, which is an add-on to Balmorel, or the network model, Spine, can for example be applied and further developed for a local integrated energy system. Final results of this Master’s Thesis will provide valuable insight into the integration of PtX facilities in future integrated energy systems. Methodology:First, a literature overview of results and modelling techniques for implementing PtX facilities into local integrated energy system models is conducted. Based on the literature overview, important features are implemented in the en- ergy system modelling framework. Finally, scenario analyses are conducted in order to assess the feasibility, optimal location and optimised operation of PtX facilites in a local integrated energy system.Expected Results: The expected outcome includes: 1) relevant literature overview; 2) formulation of relevant features and their imple- mentations in the energy system modelling framework; 3) analyses of various scenarios which are used to examine the feasibility, optimal location and optimised operation of PtX facilities in a local integrated energy system.

In the coming years, PtX technologies will be pivotal. I aim to conduct a thorough analysis, dedicating all my resources and efforts to offer novel perspectives. My goal is to demonstrate the viability of Hydrogen as a prospective fuel option for the future by providing extensive research and hopefully new insights. After the completion of my Master Thesis, you will have access (as my thesis-partnter) to my findings and results on such a hot topic, which is destined to be a game changing fuel. 

Emne motivation

Studying for almost the last 10 years, I came across througn noumerous interesting and important fields-topics. When it comes to PtX technologies and the role of Hydrogen, I am well aware of their potentials and how imporant they can be for the challenging future which lies in front. The reason for choosing this spesific field to reflect my studies in DTU and be the last piece of the cake, it was the course "Energy Systems Analysis using Balmorel model". Through this course, I saw the potentials of this model and how you can optimize an energy system assuming perfect markets and economic rationality. I was captivated with the comprehensive representation of energy technologies and infrastructures where energy sources are converted to energy vectors, which through transmission can be used to satisfy demands or be used by conversion technologies in different energy sectors. During my journey in DTU, I became familiar with the optimization techniques (Minimize Costs/Maximize Profits). Balmorel model optimizes both investments and operational dispatch in the least cost way.This Master's Thesis topic is an analysis that can be conducted through Balmorel, and that is something that motivates me.
